By now, many in Namibia appreciate that we have a renewable energy endowment beyond what we can use for our own consumption. So, the questions is, how do you capture this excess gift from above that keeps on giving and what do you do with it? The emerging thesis is that you could use the clean electricity to make green hydrogen and perhaps export that. However, our objective at the Programme goes beyond the mere production and trade of green hydrogen, a molecule that can be quite difficult to contain and transport. What is clear is that there is a concerted effort to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from industry worldwide. Some industries such as steel & fertilizer manufacturing, shipping and aviation would be very difficult to electrify. They would likely need clean molecules in one shape or another and the recipe of these clean fuels typically involves combining hydrogen with other elements from the periodic table such as carbon and nitrogen.
