GM: Policy Administration & Bancassurance
ϖ As the General Manager for Policy Administration & Bancassurance at Sanlam Namibia, how do you approach innovation in your role?
Innovation is one of Sanlam’s core values and we believe that it is not something discovered by chance, but rather developed by awareness and learning. I’ve been with the company for so long that one can easily get stuck in old ways and comfort zones, which can result in stagnation and also as a company not keeping up with a changing environment. Things that have been working for years; why do we need to change them?
No one person has all the creative ideas and solutions, therefore I do not have all the answers for sure. As such, it is important to listen to your team and your customers. Create a platform where staff get the opportunity to come up with ideas and are being heard. It is very important to not just decide that something is not going to work, but rather create the opportunity to discuss and give ownership to take an innovative idea to implementation. Following this process can also lead to the result that an idea is not executable or it can lead to starting off with one idea and ending up with a totally different solution.
ϖ In a male-dominated field like the financial sector, how have you navigated challenges and biases to reach your current position?
It does not even cross my mind that we are operating in a male-dominated environment. Each and every one of us has a responsibility that we need to take seriously in order for the company to be successful, irrespective of whether you are male or female. My colleagues are supportive and I am learning a lot from them.
We all understand our roles and respect each other in what we need to achieve.
ϖ Impactful leadership often involves fostering a positive work culture. How do you promote inclusivity and diversity in your team to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard?
I always tell my people that my door is open even when it is closed. Managers leading the different teams in my environment know the importance of interaction and clear communication. A lot of unhappiness arises from miscommunication or no communication.
It is also important to listen to people who are not always in agreement with your views. You get so much perspective by listening and understanding, and they sometimes give you perspective on your views.
ϖ In your experience, what are some of the most significant advancements in policy administration systems?
The buzzword these days is artificial intelligence. It is important that businesses are always aware of how technology can make our lives and those of our clients easier. One should also be aware of client behavior and how we manage the change for clients to also feel the ease of doing business, instead of resisting the change.
ϖ Beyond professional titles and accomplishments, personal growth is also important. What are some of the habits or practices that have contributed to your success and well-being as a leader?
There are so many platforms today through the internet and books where one can learn. The importance is to make time for it. Sometimes, learning comes from unexpected places via interaction with “ordinary people” doing extra-ordinary things.
Important learnings only to mention a few include prioritising, as you will not get all done in a day’s time. Do not procrastinate important things – you will have to do it some or other time. Tackle challenging tasks first, as you will put yourself under pressure if you do not have enough time. Don’t over analyse each and every problem as sometimes the solution is right in front of you.
ϖ What advice do you have for young women entering the financial sector with aspirations to one day be where you are?
Make sure you do not only know your direct responsibilities, but show interest beyond your own desk. Be willing to take on extra responsibilities and execute them to the best of your ability as well. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Have an attitude on why things can work rather than having excuses for why they cannot work. Know the company strategy and make sure your targets and work ethic is in line with it. Understand the industry and client behavior.
In the insurance industry, where a sales and administration team needs to work together to achieve success, it does not matter on which side you are, make it your work to understand what makes the other side tick, in order to create an efficient work relationship.
